    Directions: Rainbow Springs State Park day use area is located three miles north of Dunnellon on the east side of U.S. 41. From I-75, exit at the second Ocala exit onto State Road 40. Take State Road 40, west. Drive until it dead-ends at U.S. 41. Turn left; the park entrance is on the left-hand side of the road. From Tampa, take U.S. 41, north. Drive through the town of Dunnellon. The Headsprings Entrance is located on the right-hand side of the road, approximately 2.5 miles north of Dunnellon. From areas in the northwest, take U.S. 41 to the town of Williston. After passing through Williston, you will come to a traffic light where State Road 40 has come to a dead-end. Go through this light; the Headsprings Entrance is on the left-hand side of the road. The Campground Entrance is separate from the headsprings day use area and is located 2.5 miles north of C.R. 484 off of S.W. 180th Avenue Road or 2.5 miles south of Highway 40 off of S.W. 180th Avenue Road.

    The Tube Entrance is located 1.4 miles south of the Campground Entrance on SW 180th Avenue Road.

  • Frog Call Tour

    Crystal River Preserve State Park

    When: Wednesday, September 8, 2010 at 7:15 p.m.

    Description: Please come join Park Biologist, Keith Morin, as he leads a group through the Crystal River Preserve taking note of the frog calls that can be heard. He will begin by letting the group listen to audio of the known frogs and toads of the Preserve and proceed to take the participants through the Preserve stopping at certain locations where the group will listen, learn, and identify what they hear.  We advise all participants to wear a bug suit so for those in need of the use of one, the group is limited due to availability of bug suits so please call to sign up in advance.

Follow State Park Drive until it dead ends at the Crystal River.Eco-Walk is located at 5990 North Tallahassee Road. Take U.S. Hwy 19 north to just before Seven Rivers Hospital. Turn left onto Curtis Tool Road. The intersection of Curtis Tool and Tallahassee Road is the Eco-walk trail head.Churchhouse Hammock is across from the Crystal River Mall.

  • Celebrate Florida Literacy Month At Highlands Hammock State Park

    When: Beginning Friday, September 10th through Sunday, September 12th

    Description: Come enjoy a free day at the park during Florida's Literacy weekend. Day use entrance fees will be waived for visitors who bring a library card, library book or donate a new or gently used family-friendly book to the park. On Sunday, September 12th at 2:00 p.m., all are invited to enjoy storytime with new park manager Steven Dale in the park's picnic area. Steven will read aloud several favorite children's stories by Shel Silverstein. This activity is suitable for all ages.

  • September Is Florida Literacy Month

    When: Friday, September 10 through Sunday, September 12, 2010.

    Description: In conjunction with International Literacy Day and National Library Card Signup Month, Florida State Parks will waive day-use entrance to visitors who bring a library card, library book or with the donation of a new or gently used family friendly book on Friday, September 10 through Sunday, September 12, for Florida Literacy Month. In 2009, nearly 8,000 people participated, donating more than 1,300 books to libraries, schools and literacy organizations.

    Fees: This event is free. Representative from the Citrus County Library will be in the Visitor Center.

    Description: In celebration of Florida Literacy Month, John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park will be hosting a month-long Book Exchange in September.     Gamble Rogers Memorial State Recreation Area at Flagler Beach

    When: September 10, 2010, 2:00 p.m.

    Description: Parents please bring your children to join the Flagler County Library as we explore a variety of topics through reading while enjoying a beautiful outdoor setting. The event will be held in the large pavilion near the Intercoastal Waterway.

    Directions: From I-95: Whether you are traveling north or south on I-95, take exit 284 (State Road 100). Turn east onto State Road 100 and travel approximately 3 miles till you reach A1A (and the ocean). At the light turn right (south) and travel approximately another 3 miles. The Ranger Station will be located on the drive to your right and our day use beach facilities will be on the left.

    From Daytona: Take A1A north to approximately 1 mile north of the Flagler/Volusia County line (approximately 18 miles)The Ranger Station will be located on the drive to your left and our day use beach facilities will be to your right.

    From Ormond Beach: Take West Granada (40) east, across the Halifax River, to A1A. Turn left (north) on A1A and travel approximately 11 miles (1 mile north of the Flagler/Volusia County line). The Ranger Station will be located on the drive to your left and our day use beach facilities will be to your right.

    From Palm Coast: Take Palm Coast Parkway east across the Intercoastal Waterway (toll bridge) to A1A. Turn left (south) on A1A and travel approximately 11 miles. The park is located on A1A. The Ranger Station will be on the drive to your right and our day use beach facilities will be to your left.
    Avoid the toll: Take Palm Coast parkway east to Colbert Lane. Turn right (south) on Colbert Lane and travel approximately 7 miles to SR 100. Turn left (east) on SR 100 and travel approximately 1.5 miles to A1A. Turn right on A1A and travel about 3 miles. The Ranger Station will be located on the drive to your right and our day use beach facilities will be to your left.

    From St. Augustine: Take A1A south for approximately 32 miles to SR 100. Continue straight through the light and travel approximately another 3 miles to the park. The Ranger Station will be located on the drive on your right and our day use beach facilities will be located on your left.

Turn left (north) and go 7 miles on State Road A1A, you will have arrived at Sebastian Inlet.From Brevard County: From Interstate 95, take the U.S. 192 exit and go east until you reach State Road A1A in Indialantic. Turn right (south) on State Road A1A and go 18 miles to get to Sebastian Inlet.

  • The Barnacle Under Moonlight - Valerie Wisecracker

  • Literacy Month - Childrens Book Reading

    Description: Join us on September 10 as we celebrate Literacy Month with a very special book reading by Nancy Hodges. Nancy is the Children's Librarian at the Village of North Palm Beach Library. She will be reading from several books about sea turtles and sea turtle hatchlings. Her program will be geared toward pre-schoolers. In addition, there will be a craft session and a guided tour of the Nature Center. The program is free with park admission.

    Topsail Hill Preserve State Park

    When: Saturday, Sept 11th from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.

    Description: The Department of Environmental Protection's Topsail Hill Preserve State Park will be having a Breakfast with a Ranger at 9AM. Join the Rangers of Topsail Hill and ask them all the questions you can think of about park life. This program is family oriented and ideal for the whole family to enjoy. To cover the cost of food, please bring $4, which goes to Friends of Topsail Hill Preserve State Park to enhance the park or bring your own breakfast. Park at the Day-Use area off Hwy 30A and take a short hike to the clubhouse. Park entry fee for this event is waived.

    Directions: Topsail Hill Preserve State Park is located in Santa Rosa Beach, 10 miles east of Destin, FL. Take I-10 to Exit 85 (Defuniak Springs) and follow U.S. Highway 331 south. Travel 27 miles to U.S. Highway 98. Turn right and travel approximately five miles west to scenic Highway 30A. Turn left and go a quarter mile to the entrance on the right.

  • Swift Night Out At Wakulla Springs

    When: Saturday, Sept 11th from 7:15 p.m. to 8:15 p.m.

    Description: The Department of Environmental Protection's Wakulla Springs Lodge & State Park welcomes participants to join people all over the country as they stand beneath chimneys to watch and count chimney swifts enter their roost. The Lodge at Wakulla Springs has a large flock that roosts in one of its inactive chimneys. Come to witness the swifts swirling aerial dance prior to their descent into the chimney. Be part of a nationwide program to estimate their numbers. Enjoy this unusual ranger-led program to see firsthand one of nature's amazing spectacles. Satisfy your hunger before the event with dinner in the lodge.

  • Olustee Civil War Expo

    Olustee Battlefield Historic State Park

    When: Saturday, September 11, 2010. 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m.

    Description: Experience a day of authentic military drills, storytelling, exhibits, period artisans and the war's traveling merchants. This event features reenactors portraying civilian life during the Civil War. Demonstrations of blacksmithing, civilian life, ladies tea and other activities also are scheduled, along with exhibits of relic collections. Demonstrations of authentic weapons and fighting tactics used in the Civil War will include cavalry and infantry drills and full-scale artillery firing.

    Fees: A donation of $5 per vehicle is requested.

    Directions: Olustee Battlefield is located on U.S. 90, 15 miles east of Lake City and 50 miles west of Jacksonville.
    From I-10 exit at U.S. 90 west. The battlefield is located 5.5 miles from the exit.

  • Reading With The Snakes

    Colt Creek State Park

    When: September 11, 2010 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

    Description: Come spend a couple of hours in the park and learn all about snakes of florida and check out books from the local book mobile that will be on site during the event. Snake related coloring and activity sheets and snake ID booklets will be available for free while supplies last.

    Description: The Department of Environmental Protection’s Wakulla Springs State Park invites park guests to participate in a treasure hunt in honor of Literacy Day. Small teams of three to five members will work together to decipher and unscramble the clues which will lead to a reward. This is a great exercise for families, Boy or Girl Scout troops, or any small group willing to endure a challenge.  Not part of a small group? Meet in the Lodge lobby to be included on a team and join the rest in preparing with a brief orientation. Participants must be able to read signs, count, and follow directions.

    Description: Join us as we celebrate Florida Literacy Month with a day of stories, crafts, activities and snacks.   Internationally acclaimed performer Chris Kastle, the Director of Education from the St. Augustine Lighthouse and Museum, will present a highly interactive story of adventure, bringing the history of St. Augustine alive.   Children will then explore the history of Fort Mose by participating in a fun-filled scavenger hunt. Throughout the day, children will also have the opportunity to create their own bookmarks and try their hand at writing their own story.   From 1:00 p.m to 3:00 p.m. author Glennette Tilley Turner who will be onsite promoting her newly released book Fort Mose and The Story Of The Man Who Built The First Free Black Settlement In Colonial America.   Mrs. Turner, author of nine children’s books including An Apple for Harriet Tubman, will be available to answer questions and sign copies of her new book.  She will provide visitors with a special treat by reading excerpts from Fort Mose and the Story of the Man Who Built the First Free Black Settlement in Colonial America.

The theater group's membership cuts across generational lines and its composition incorporates people of diverse backgrounds. Their entertaining presentations seek to connect people with their community by using material based upon their own regional heritage. This is a great way for families to experience the artful exchange of ideas just as some cultures do under the spreading limbs of a palaver tree. The only difference is that the spreading limbs will be substituted by the painted ceilings of the Wakulla Springs Lodge.     Faver-Dykes State Park

    When: September 11th, 2010 10:00 a.m.

    Description: Bring your little ones to Faver-Dykes State Park to celebrate Literacy Month.   Admission will be waived if you present a Library Card, library book, or donate a family friendly book the weekend of September 10th-12th. On Saturday, September 11th, we will host Reading with a Ranger.  Once in the park, head to the picnic pavilion area where a Park Ranger will read a few great environmental children's books and hold a short activity.

  • Pontoon Boat Ride On Silver River

    Silver River State Park

    When: September 11, 2010; 9:30

    Description: Marion County Commissioners have proclaimed that September 2010 is "Marion County Springs Festival Month" in honor of the ninth year of celebration and education about the County's fresh water springs.  Multiple events will be held throughout the month of September.  As part of this, Silver River will be providing guided pontoon tours on the pristine Silver River.  The first tram will start at 9:45 am to take you down the Swamp Trail to the boat dock where you will board the pontoon for an educational ride, learning about the importance of Silver River and Silver Springs as part of the Floridan Aquifer.   This will be on a first come, first served basis, so reservations will not be taken.  Please understand that seating is limited and if attendance is more than we anticipate we will not be able to guarantee participation for everyone.  There is no cost for the tour; our primary focus is education.     Blue Spring State Park

    Description: Celebrate Literacy Month with a reading from Jacksonville children's author Jane R. Wood. Listen to stories about manatees and other wildlife along with hands-on activities to promote reading and writing skills throughout the park.

  • Literacy Month - Sidewalk Art

    Fort Pierce Inlet State Park

    When: September 11, 8:00 AM - Sunset

    Description: In celebration of Literacy Month, Ft. Pierce Inlet State Park invites local students to illustrate their favorite storybook on the park’s sidewalks. On Saturday, September 11th, pre-registered students will receive free entry to the park, a bag of sidewalk chalk and a square of sidewalk to decorate with scenes from their favorite storybook. Students may register by calling the park at (772) 468-3985 and giving their name, school and the name of their favorite book. The regular park admission fee will also be waived on September 10, 11 and 12 for any park visitor presenting a library card, library book or donating a gently-used, family-friendly book.

    Fort George Island Cultural State Park

    When: Sunday, September 12, 2010 at 10:00 a.m.

    Description: Join a ranger for an interactive reading of the delightful children’s book A Day in the Salt Marsh by Kevin Kurtz.  Learn about what happens in a salt marsh hour by hour as the tide rises and falls.  Enjoy illustrations of the animals that inhabit the salt marsh, and learn how they go about their lives in their ever changing environment.  Try your hand at games and activities featuring the salt marsh or take a walk on your own to see some of the plants and animals of the marsh first hand.  This program will take place at the Ribault Club on Fort George Island Cultural State Park. No reservations are necessary and the program is free.

  • September Is Florida Literacy Month

    Fanning Springs State Park

    When: Sunday, September 12, 2010 at 12:00 noon to 2:00 p.m.

    Description: Participants can enjoy a picture showing out of his book and how to write a book by author Dr. Metts between 12:00 noon and 2:00 p.m.  Event is set up for every visitor to safely participate with little or no assistance required.

    Fees: Activity is free with park admission. Friday, Sept. 10-Sunday, Sept. 12 - free for Literacy Month for visitors who bring a library card, library book, or who donate a new or gently used family-friendly book.
